Interview with Belinda of Base Supply

We recently invited the smart and creative women behind some of Australia’s best lifestyle brands to be a part of a series of interviews. We kicked it off on International Women’s Day and caught up with Karen – co-founder of graphic design company, Me & Amber. This week, we sat down with Belinda – the oh-so-clever lady behind Base Supply.

As women, we use handbags every day. But we often we need to switch it up depending on where we’re going or what we’re doing! After finding herself constantly packing (and repacking) for days out and weekends away, Belinda decided she needed a bag to support her daily life – the perfect home away from home for her stuff. So, the first collection of Base bags was created!

Tell us about Base Supply. Where did it all start for you?

As a working mum constantly on the go, I needed to create a base for my basics that was durable and washable for longevity. With a love of minimal design, there wasn’t much available, so I attended my first trade fair in China where supplier connections where made, and I got designing.

How has social media impacted your business?

It has impacted my business in an incredibly positive way. Without social media, Base may not have hit the ground running as well as it did. It’s a powerful platform to leverage and one I’m still learning more and more about every day. (Follow Base on Instagram here).

What advice do you have for riding the highs and lows of entrepreneurship?

The highs – I always celebrate. The lows – I always learn.

How do you get out of a creative funk?

If I’m lacking inspiration, I find enrolling in a workshop or short course always helps to spark up new ideas and reignite creativity. Plus, you get to meet a lot of other inspiring business owners too!

What are you most proud of in your career to date?

As a Mum of two children, I have to juggle running the business with my family life. It doesn’t come easily, but it’s something that I’m really proud of.

What is the key to success in business?

“Don’t limit your challenges; challenge your limits.” I refer back to this quote by Jerry Dunn often. Once we push outside of our comfort zones, that’s where all the magic happens.

What kind of challenges have you faced during your career as an entrepreneur and how did you overcome them?

The greatest thing about failure is that it’s a chance to revise. I can look at what went wrong and why, then I work out how to do it better. Those are the magical moments of growth and success I mentioned earlier.

Don’t be too afraid of challenges!

What’s the best piece of advice you have for women wanting to start a business?

Surround yourself with people who believe in you.

There are many people that have influenced or inspired me over the years. Holding on to every little piece of inspiration from each person has definitely contributed to where I am today. Many of them are probably unaware that they gave me so much inspiration. I believe we draw out what we seek to accomplish.

Tell us why International Women’s Day is important to you?

Having a 14-year-old daughter makes it very relevant. It’s a day to celebrate the women who changed history and those women who will advance gender equality in the future.

What’s next for Base Supply?

Apart from some gorgeous designs, there will be some changes with a focus on environmentally sustainable practices in 2019. I’m conscious of the company’s footprint and I feel passionate about making meaningful changes.
